Final Costume: McCalls M7645 by Yaya Han

The costumed turned out really well.  We had one wardrobe malfunction.  The wire loops I baked into the Sculpey buttons really didn't turn out so well.  As soon as they met the smallest resistance, the wire loops popped out.   With just thirty minutes before 'trick or treat time', I had to attach a micro-drill bit to my dremel, put two small holes in each button, and then re-sew them.  With a bit of time to spare, she was ready for photos.

Pokemon Halloween Costume - Flareon

Here is the Pokemon Flareon Halloween costume that I made for my daughter - Halloween 2010.

How I did it:

1.  I started with McCall's Sewing Pattern 4951 Boys Size 7-14 Halloween Costumes Super Hero Ninja Batman.

2.  I elimanted the ninja details, and used the pattern to construct a plain body suit.  I chose the right size pattern for my daughter's waist measurement, and then shortened it to her height.  I used a strip of narrow velcro for the back closure.

3.  Using just the bodice part of the pattern in one size larger (is called a bodice if it's a boy's pattern???  I don't know), I made a sleeveless vest from the fake fur. I left the back open and just safety pinned it closed for wearing.

4.  Using the pattern, I made a plain ninja hood and mask, but I decorated the mask with applique pieces of black and white fabric to make the eyes.

5. I drew a pattern for the tale on the back of the fake fur.  When cutting fake fur, it's best to cut from the back, and make shallow cuts, just on the backing.  If you cut through the fur, you will have fluff everywhere.  I sewed the two sides of the fur tail together by hand, then stuffed with poly-fill.

6.  I sewed the tail onto the back end of the suit (below the Velcro opening).  Again, by hand, as it was too much to get up under the machine.  When she wore the costume, I pinned the pointy end of the tail to the top of the vest.
